“Scarless” Trans-Umbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)

Posted by drbg on September 14, 2007

I am happy now to be offering trans-umbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) to appropriate patients. With an intra-umbilical incision, saline implants can be tunneled under the skin to the breasts where they can be positioned in a submuscular pocket. This will produce exactly the same result as an incision at or on the breast, but the scar is virtually invisible within the umbilicus. This technique can also be used to insert breast implants through the abdominal incision during an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck). TUBA cannot be used with silicone implants because these implants are pre-filled with a thick gel, require larger incisions for insertion, and cannot be placed through thin tunnels.

For more information please feel free to call my office at 215-572-7744 or email us.  My web site, www.drgenter.com has lots of information.

    Hi Dr. Genter,

What factors would make a patient appropriate for the (TUBA) method and what would make a patient not approriate for it?

Also, how long have you been practicing the (TUBA) method and how many patients have you performed it on?

Dear Dara: I am sorry it took me so long to answer your questions. I was having some technical problems with this blog that are now resolved. The TUBA procedure is useful for patients who want saline implants and do not need any kind of a breast lift. Saline implants are inserted empty and rolled up through a subcutaneous tunnel from the navel to the breast. Silicone implants are pre-filled and therefore cannot be used with the TUBA technique. I have performed the TUBA since the autumn of 2007 on over a dozen patients with excellent results and no complications. Also, for reasons that I cannot explain, the TUBA patients have had less pain and bruising than my other breast augmentation patients. I offer the TUBA to all appropriate patients, but for some reason many patients seemed nervous to try a different technique than their friends had. Pretty soon I will have some long term post-op pictures to show patients. So far I and my patients are very pleased with the TUBA. Thank you for your interest. Dr. Genter

TUBA breast augmentation seems like an excellent procedure for women who prefer not to have scarring. You do an excellent job of detailing the procedure.
